P0213

Cold Start Injector 1 Malfunction

Severity
Medium

When a vehicle powertrain module registers the fault code P0213, it points directly to an internal system malfunction identified as "Cold Start Injector 1 Malfunction". Operating your engine under this condition may degrade long-term fuel maps.

Driver's Summary

Code P0213 means your vehicle detected a problem with the cold start injector 1 malfunction system. In practice, this fault causes extended crank time when cold, rough idle until warm. The vehicle is usually drivable, but the root cause needs attention soon to avoid more expensive repairs down the road.

Symptoms

Extended crank time when cold, rough idle until warm

Common Causes

  • Failed cold start injector
  • Clogged cold start injector
  • Faulty cold start thermal time switch
  • Wiring issue

How to Fix

  1. 1 Replace cold start injector
  2. 2 Clean the injector
  3. 3 Test and replace thermal time switch
  4. 4 Repair wiring harness

Technical Explanation

The ECM detects code P0213 by continuously monitoring the relevant sensor circuit against calibrated threshold values stored in its non-volatile memory. The PCM monitors crankshaft rotational velocity via the CKP sensor at a resolution of individual tooth gaps on the reluctor ring. A combustion event in each cylinder produces a measurable acceleration spike; its absence or weakness is flagged as a misfire event within a 200-revolution or 1000-revolution test window. The fault remains stored in memory even after the MIL is cleared; it becomes a confirmed DTC after failing two consecutive drive cycles, and the PCM logs a freeze frame record of the engine's exact operating state at the moment of detection.

Is It Safe to Drive?

Medium-severity fault: the car functions but not optimally. The failed cold start injector issue will not resolve itself and will cause measurable long-term wear. A repair in the $100–$400 range now avoids far higher costs later.

Mechanic's Pro Tip

When diagnosing P0213, always test fuel volume delivery in addition to static pressure — a pump that holds pressure at idle but delivers insufficient volume under load will cause the fault only during acceleration or high demand, making it difficult to replicate in the driveway. Use a fuel pressure gauge with a volume outlet port: a healthy pump should deliver at least 1 liter per minute. Replace the fuel filter first; it's the cheapest test and solves the fault in a significant percentage of cases.
