P0274

Cylinder 5 Injector Circuit High

Severity
High

Encountering the engine check light code P0274 signifies an explicit mechanical or electrical operational breakdown categorized as "Cylinder 5 Injector Circuit High". Professional scanner tools usually flag this subsystem loop early on.

Driver's Summary

The diagnostic trouble code P0274 indicates an active fault in the cylinder 5 injector circuit high circuit or component. You may notice misfire, raw fuel smell from exhaust, all of which are direct consequences of this malfunction. This condition is classified as high severity. Prompt diagnosis is essential to prevent cascading damage to related components.

Symptoms

Misfire, raw fuel smell from exhaust

Common Causes

  • Short to voltage on Cyl 5 control wire
  • Internally failed injector
  • Wiring harness damaged
  • PCM fault

How to Fix

  1. 1 Inspect and repair wiring harness
  2. 2 Replace fuel injector
  3. 3 Tape and secure wiring
  4. 4 Test PCM

Technical Explanation

To set P0274, the PCM samples the affected circuit multiple times per second, comparing live readings against manufacturer-programmed operating windows. Misfire rate is counted per cylinder over rolling windows and compared against two thresholds: a catalyst-damaging rate (triggers flashing MIL) and an emissions-exceeding rate (triggers solid MIL). The PCM logs which cylinder is misfiring based on crankshaft position at the time of each detected event. After two failed drive cycles, the code transitions from a pending to a confirmed DTC, and the PCM activates the MIL. Clearing the code without repairing the fault will result in re-illumination within one to two complete drive cycles.

Is It Safe to Drive?

With P0274 active, your engine or transmission is not operating within design parameters. Short-term driving may seem fine, but internal damage is accumulating — particularly to short to voltage on cyl 5 control wire.

Mechanic's Pro Tip

When diagnosing P0274, always test fuel volume delivery in addition to static pressure — a pump that holds pressure at idle but delivers insufficient volume under load will cause the fault only during acceleration or high demand, making it difficult to replicate in the driveway. Use a fuel pressure gauge with a volume outlet port: a healthy pump should deliver at least 1 liter per minute. Replace the fuel filter first; it's the cheapest test and solves the fault in a significant percentage of cases.
